The Slovak Woman of the Year poll is a prestigious project whose main goal is to best highlight the women who contribute to the growth of the country. It discovers and honors in nine categories women who are recognized experts in their professions, in the fields of art, healthcare, science, sports, education, as well as women who have dedicated their energy to charity and helping others.
Our chairwoman of the supervisory board, Darina Pavlů, was among the nominated ladies of the 16th edition of the SLOVENIAN WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2024 poll, which is prepared by the weekly Slovenka in cooperation with RTVS. She is nominated in the Business and Management category. Being among the nominees is a great honor and privilege for Darina, but it is also an award for our group of companies, PPA CONTROLL, which she heads.
No one ever forced her, but she had always expected to take over the family business. As a high school student, she applied for a part-time job at the company run by her father, and when she was deciding on her future studies, she chose law because it seemed appropriate for her future mission. Later, she studied in Barcelona, where she received an MBA and a managerial-economic perspective. After her father, she took over the position of Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of PPA CONTROLL, as in 2018 at the age of 37.
She does not have a technical background, but she believes that this is not necessary when running a technology company. Her role is to manage the company's direction, strategy and business plans, together with the board of directors. In order to best perform her role, she is constantly educating herself in management skills. Overall, she has earned the respect of other employees in the company by striving for a constructive approach to problems and also a certain level of insight that is expected of a leadership position. "I think it's important to be surrounded by experts you can always consult with. Because it's never about one person's decision. You always have to consider and listen to the opinions of others and discuss and find the most optimal solution."
Just like in life, there are tough times and crises in business. How Darina copes with them is best described in her own words. "When a crisis comes, I tell myself that I have no choice but to deal with it. Once I've set out on this journey, I definitely won't give up. Sport helps me cope. My passion is adrenaline sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, wave surfing, I like mountain biking, in winter I like freeriding on a snowboard, skiing, cross-country skiing. I love walking with my dog... Hobbies always allow me to forget about problems for a while and switch off. And there are, of course, my parents, but also friends who I can turn to when I feel bad."
The company's success and market position lie primarily in the quality of its employees, which the management is fully aware of. And because the company is doing well, the family can also devote itself to philanthropy. "Our handwriting can be seen behind the creation of the Transport Museum in Bratislava and we also saved the national cultural monument Pálffy Palace on Zámocká Street in Bratislava. We completely renovated it and now it serves as a concert hall, a space for social events and there are two galleries of contemporary art. We also save and preserve technical cultural monuments, such as historical veterans, and we strive to bring them closer to the public in every corner of Slovakia by organizing the 500 km Slovak veteran race," recalls Darina Pavlủ, the continuer of the family tradition.
